Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the duties of the President in his absence. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat.

History of Grama Panchayat

Vazhayur is a region with a rich social and cultural heritage. From the period of the Chera kings, the area held importance for local assemblies and regional administrative systems, and later developed as part of the rule of the Zamorins. Agriculture, trade, handicrafts, and the library movement greatly contributed to the social progress of Vazhayur. Even during the period of the landlord-tenant system, the region witnessed notable advancements in education, medicine, and Kalaripayattu. The people of Vazhayur actively participated in the 1921 Malabar Rebellion and the Indian freedom struggle.
